The last post discussed fear of consequences as a motivational strategy, but today we’re going to cover competition.

Today’s post is going to go over how competition can be used to motivate your team members. This strategy is going to make you a better leader while enabling you to provide your team with the fuel they need to do their best. As is the case with the other strategies, this will work best in a small, family-owned business. Without further ado, let’s delve into how this strategy can be used.
Utilizing Competition in a Family-Owned Business
Let me start by saying how important it is to use healthy competition. Unhealthy competition isn’t good for any business, and can create resentment, burnout, and subpar performances—the exact opposite of what you want for your company! Healthy competition is friendly, fun, and laidback, it’s something that everyone can enjoy regardless of who wins in the end. There might be natural competition within your family unit, but it’s important to make sure that you encourage professional competition. That way you have something that doesn’t rely on family relationships and is accessible to everyone in the company, including non-relatives.
Consider having your employees compete for cash prizes or other rewards, such as a free meal at their favorite restaurant. You might also want to implement an employee of the month program to recognize your top performer. Healthy competition can do great things for your business. There’s something about surpassing others that makes people feel good, so this type of competition can be a great motivator for many people.
When using competition in your business, you want to make sure that your employees are competing for things they truly want. It’s easy to assume when it comes to this, but it’s important to have a discussion with your team members to find out what type of rewards motivate them the most. You might find out that they get particularly fired up about employee of the month programs but aren’t as jazzed about gift certificates. Check in with them to make sure that you choose the best possible way to implement competition.
Competition can really liven up your business and strengthen the performances of your team members.
