Today’s post is going to go over how to use significance/purpose to motivate your team members. This strategy is going to strengthen your ability to lead while helping you give your team everything they need to do their best work. As is the case with other strategies, this will work best in a small, family-owned business. Now, let’s get into how we can use this strategy.
Using Significance/Purpose in a Family-Owned Business
Everyone wants to feel like their work has meaning. It’s hard to stay motivated if you don’t feel like there’s a point to what you’re doing. In a business, it’s important to make sure your team members feel like there’s a reason they’re doing what they’re doing. Make sure you reiterate how a person’s work and performance helps your company and all the amazing things they help make happen. When there’s a victory, let them share in it and discuss how they’re part of it. People need to see the fruits of their labors and how they impact the company. Knowing that their work makes a difference will be empowering to your team members, and will make it easier for them to push themselves and give their best performances.
In a family-owned business, there might be a feeling that the significance/purpose of the work has to do with the family unit. While this may be true, it’s crucial to ensure that your team members have a sense of significance/purpose regarding their work that has to do with the company at large and is accessible to all employees, family or not.
You should also keep in mind the fact that significance/purpose can have somewhat different meanings from person to person. Some people like to know that they’re helping others, other people like to know that others are relying on them, and still others prefer to hear about what is made possible by the things they do. It’s important to take stock of what makes each employee feel like they’re work has meaning, and help them connect with whatever that is.
Tapping into significance/purpose can really refresh and motivate your employees and enhance their performances.
