How to be a Champion in Your Business

 

Hello everyone, and thank you once again for joining me for today’s blog post. I know each and every one of you is very busy, so I really appreciate the fact that you’re willing to take time out of your day to read this post. Today, we’re going to discuss how to be a champion in your business. I think a lot about how to be a champion in terms of my almost 6-year-old son, as that’s something he and I talk a lot about.

I know there are a lot of different definitions of being a champion, so there may be a lot of people who disagree with me on mine. That’s totally okay! My definition is just the one that we’re going to be discussing today. According to my definition, a champion is someone who consistently gives their best effort. This is what I tell my son. And I care about him doing his best with the talents God has given him. That’s all he can do. He can only maximize his God-given strengths and talents by continuing to use them while consistently giving his best effort.

So, that’s going to be the definition we use today as we look at your business and how to be a champion in it. With that in mind, I’m going to discuss and define six different things to look at in regards to being a champion. Incorporating these six elements into your life is bound to have a positive impact, so I’m really excited to share them with you. Here goes!

1) Focus-

Focus on the activity at hand. In other words, look at the activity that will put you in a position to get the results you want, and then give it your best efforts. This activity could be making a certain number of sales calls, getting up at a certain time to begin cranking out emails, or doing something with marketing.

Or maybe the activity is to have meetings with your team members to focus on them and their growth plan. In any case, focus on that activity. It’s all about focusing on the right activity while giving it your best consistent effort.

2) Never take a day off-

Now, give me a chance to explain myself here, because I don’t mean this literally. I definitely believe in taking time off to relax and whatnot. What I mean by the term ‘never take a day off’ is that you shouldn’t do so unless it’s planned and intentional. When you choose to work, when you are working, don’t ever take a day off.

Many people go to work but they’re really off. They’re off mentally, physically, and in other sorts of ways, and as a result they really don’t do much during that day. So if you’re going to take a day off, do it. Make sure you don’t engage in any work related activity during that day.

There are so many people who are unproductive and have wasted days. As such, you should never take a day off unless you’re genuinely taking a break to relax. You have to consistently give your best effort whenever you’re working.

3) Avoid coasting-

Resist the urge to coast. This is somewhat connected to what I said about never taking a day off. Some people just kind of coast through a season and they give their minimum effort. Please, don’t do that!

Consistently give your best effort at all times. Don’t give into the temptation to slack off. I’m not talking about going crazy and overboard. Just make sure you do the things you need to do and that you do the best you can with them.

4) Celebrate-

Celebrate your results. This applies even to the small ones. Champions need to have some affirmation that they’re on the right track. So if you make a call and get an appointment or presentation because of it, celebrate that in a small way. Celebrate the little wins.

Often times we only celebrate the big wins, and that makes sense to a certain extent. After all, we need to have big wins, make money, and do things to have great success. However, it’s also true that we need to celebrate the mini-wins and find ways to have satisfaction in knowing that we’re winning along the way. So, in short, make sure that you take the time to celebrate the little results.

5) Compete-

Compete with yourself. This is kind of what we’ve been talking about throughout this whole post. Of course, I definitely believe in outside competition as well. I think it’s great, because other people help you get better.

Yet at the same time, I think the reality is that all you can do is the best that you can do, and so you have to compete with yourself on a day-to-day basis. You have the ability to be better than your previous self, to be better than you were the day before, to be better than you were the year before. At the end of the day, you really need to compete with yourself.

 6) Record-

Record what you’re doing when you find success. When you’re being a champion and you’re consistently giving your best efforts, record and document what’s going on in your life that’s allowing you to do so. Maybe you’re going through a period where you’re getting great sleep or you’re exercising regularly, or perhaps you’re consistently giving your best effort because you’re having great relationships outside of work. Or, it could be because you’re always showing up on time and fully prepared to your coaching sessions with your business coach.

Whatever it may be, I think it’s important to document and record what you’re doing during that time of success. When you slide out of champion mode and become less consistent (perhaps you’re coasting), sometimes you’ll need to refer back to this sixth step where you documented your success. Doing so will allow you to recall what you were doing and get back to those practices that will allow you to be a champion again. With that in mind, recording can be absolutely essential when it comes to being able to give your best effort on a consistent basis.

Conclusion

I know there can be a lot of different views in terms of a what a champion is, but that’s not the point of this post. At the end of the day, I just want to encourage you, whatever your belief or definition is, to give your best effort consistently. If you do that, good things are going to happen with your business.
